Export

Export molecular data, high-resolution images, and video from a validated Viewer state.

Export is the final step of a scientific communication workflow. Validate the molecular scope, camera, visual encoding, and project context before creating a file for use outside the Viewer.

Choose the export type

OutputEntry pointUse it for
PDB or CIFFile → ExportStructural coordinates from the active structure
SDF or mol2File → Export when a compatible small molecule is activeLigand or small-molecule exchange
PNGStudio → ScreenshotFigures, reports, slides, and review records
MP4Studio → Animation / RenderCamera motion or trajectory presentation

The availability of each data format depends on the active structure. Confirm that the correct item is active under Structures before exporting.

Export molecular data

Activate the structure or small molecule you intend to export.
Open File → Export.
Choose the required format.
Review the downloaded filename and molecular scope before sharing it.

Visual changes such as ribbon style, colors, lighting, and camera do not turn a coordinate export into an image. Use Studio for visual output.

Export a PNG image

Prepare the scene and save the source as a named viewer session.
Open Studio in the right sidebar.
Open the screenshot controls.
Choose the resolution and whether the background should be transparent.
Capture the image and inspect the downloaded PNG at full size.
Resolution optionOutput sizeTypical use
ViewportCurrent viewport sizeFast review and exact on-screen composition
HD1280 × 720Lightweight slide or screen output
Full HD1920 × 1080General presentation and report use
Ultra HD3840 × 2160High-detail figures and large displays

Transparent backgrounds are useful for layout work, but thin white labels or lines may disappear when placed on a light page. Validate the final composition, not only the transparent PNG.

Annotation cards are interface overlays and may not appear in exported images. If a conclusion must be visible in the output, use supported molecular labels, measurement labels, or add the text in the approved figure or story workflow.

Export video

Studio can render an MP4 from a camera or trajectory animation.

AnimationMain choicesUse it for
Camera SpinDuration, speed, directionComplete structural overview
Camera RockDuration, speed, angleGentle depth cue without a full rotation
TrajectoryPlayback mode and durationMolecular-dynamics motion

Output controls include resolution, quality, and frames per second. Higher settings increase render time and file size.

Render a reliable video

Save the source Viewer state.
Choose the animation and preview the intended motion where possible.
Set a short duration and moderate resolution for the first test.
Render and review the complete MP4.
Increase resolution, quality, or frame rate only after composition and motion are correct.

For a trajectory video, pause and validate the topology, components, and frame range before opening Studio. A smooth render cannot correct an incorrect trajectory pair or scientific scope.

Pre-export checklist

  • Correct project and active structure.
  • Correct trajectory frame or frame range.
  • No unintended hidden components.
  • Consistent color meaning and sufficient contrast.
  • Camera framing with appropriate margins.
  • Readable interaction lines, labels, and measurements.
  • Saved viewer session for reproducibility.
  • Output opened and inspected after download.
